This section of the merged map base for this level shows the valley of the Minnesota (St. Peter) River as it flows northeast to its joining with the Mississippi. Click the "1840" button to see the information recorded by Joseph Nicollet about native peoples and names on his "mother map." Click on an area to zoom in. Navigate using the arrows in the map margin.
This is the most southwesterly of the present nine overlapping panels of the base map. Future revisions will expand map coverage to the south and west to allow you to trace the Minnesota River valley as it swings north at Mankato to the short portage that links to the Red River and its flow into Canada. For more information about the map see the lower left-hand frame.
