This section of the combined base map for this level shows the southeastern fringe of the St. Paul/Minneapolis metropolitan area and the joining of the Saint Croix and Mississippi to form Lake Pepin as their combined waters begin the run to the Gulf of Mexico. The "1840" button will show the information recorded by Joseph Nicollet about this key historic area. Future revisions will follow the river downstream to the Quad Cities and Saint Louis.

This is the most south-eastern of the present nine overlapping panels of the base map. Zooming further into the "deep map" in the area of downtown Saint Paul and the riverbend will make available a portal to drill down further into even deeper layers. It is the only such portal for now. More will be added in the future, for other geographic areas.
